Winter Aches and Pains

We all know that winter in upon us with the prevalence of cold rainy days, crisp mornings and cold nights. For people already living with chronic joint conditions, winter is a time “hallmarked” with increased joint pain and stiffness. If you already have joint pain, you might agree that winter is a more difficult time to navigate.

So why is joint pain worse in the colder months? The scientific understanding of why joint pain is exacerbated by cold weather is not yet fully understood. However, it is thought that a drop in the barometric pressure may cause joints to expand, increasing pressure on joint pain receptors, thereby exacerbating joint pain. Low temperatures may also increase the viscosity of synovial fluid, the lubricating fluid within your joints, resulting in increased joint stiffness.

Listed below is a few tips to help you navigate joint pain in winter.

Tip #1.

My first tip to help you manage joint pain during winter is to stay hydrated. Many people forget to drink water in winter. In relation to joints; water supports the production of synovial fluid which lubricates and cushions your joints.

Tip #2.

It’s not ideal to drink large volumes of fluid all at once. It’s much better to hydrate with regular glasses of water interspersed throughout your day. It might help to set a reminder on your phone to remind you to drink some water every hour or so.

Tip #3.

Try drinking caffeine free beverages as a part of your daily fluid intake. Herbal teas contain medicinal plants and herbs, which yield additional benefits. If you love herbal tea, then you may like to visit my clinic in Ocean Grove where we have a beautiful selection of caffeine-free herbal teas available for your purchase.
