Osteopathy
What is Osteopathy?
Osteopathic philosophy adopts a wholistic approach to health care by using a whole body centred approach to care for their patients. Osteopaths recognise the interconnectedness of the body and its inherent capacity to heal itself. The structure and function of the neuromuscular skeletal system is pivotal in a person’s health. If one part of the body is affected, it can have implications on other areas of the body.
If the conditions for healing are not conducive, strain and other compensation patterns can develop in the body, which can lead to pain, restriction of movement and impaired functioning of one or more of its parts. The aim of Osteopathic treatment is to support the body’s inherent capacity to heal itself by releasing strain patterns held in the body, thereby optimising the conditions for health and healing.
How does Osteopathy help your body to heal?
Osteopaths are highly trained and skilled with their hands to locate areas in your body that are carrying tension and strain. Through the application of manual therapy techniques, they can rebalance, mobilise and realign your body, thereby optimising conditions for healing. A visit to an Osteopath will involve questioning about your medical history, assessment of how your body moves and an evaluation of the cause of your problem. They will use manual therapy techniques to diagnose and treat your body.
Techniques may include:
◦ Soft tissue massage
◦ Muscle energy techniques
◦ Cranial Osteopathy
◦ Joint mobilisation
◦ Stretching
◦ Strengthening exercises
◦ Positional release techniques

Cranial Osteopathy
What is Cranial Osteopathy?
Cranial Osteopathy is a very gentle form of Osteopathy. Cranial Osteopaths use light touch and minimal pressure to release strains in your body. The gentle style of treatment means that it is suitable for people of all ages form newborns to the elderly and frail. Despite the name Cranial Osteopaths do not just treat the head. Cranial osteopaths treat the whole body and adopt a wholistic approach to health care. Light pressure is applied to different parts of the body to release tension and strain held in your muscles, joints, nervous system, organs and connective tissues, restoring balance to your whole system.
How does Cranial Osteopathy help your body to heal?
Cranial Osteopaths are highly trained and skilled with their hands to locate areas in your body that are carrying strain. Through the application of light pressure they can balance, mobilise and align your body, thereby optimising conditions for healing and health.
Patients usually lie on their backs, although side lying and sitting positions can be used. Cranial Osteopaths place their hands under different parts of your body and use gentle light pressure to release strain patterns stored in your body. Some patients feel sensations in their body during the treatment ie warmth, tingling, pulsing. Most patients find it very relaxing and feel the healing effects throughout their whole body.

Osteopathy For Children
Osteopathy For Children
Cranial Osteopathy is a very gentle form of Osteopathy that is particularly suited to babies and children. Cranial Osteopathy recognises the interrelated nature of all systems of the body. Whilst our body has an inherent capacity to heal and regulate itself, sometimes it’s not able to resolve the impact of strain it experiences. Unresolved strains are carried in the body and over time can cause disruption to different parts of the system. The body may express these disruptions in the form of pain, discomfort, tension, illness and behavioural changes.
Despite the name, Cranial Osteopaths do not just treat the head. Cranial Osteopaths treat the whole body by using gentle manual therapy techniques. This is felt as gentle pressure applied to different parts of the body. This approach helps to restore balance and harmony in the body. Treatment is very relaxing.
Some signs that may indicate your child is carrying unresolved strain in their body include:
Restless leg syndrome
Disrupted sleep behaviours
Chronic infections
Digestive issues
Headaches
Anxiety with everyday tasks
Behaviour problems
Body aches and pain
Postural strain and tightness
Joint pain
Headaches

Pregnancy and Postpartum
Osteopathy For Pregnancy
Pregnancy is an exciting time in a woman’s life as they embrace the joy of bringing new life into the world. Pregnancy is a time of constant change and compensation in a woman’s body. To accommodate the growing baby your body goes through various stages of change. Some are visually obvious, others more subtle. During pregnancy your body releases a hormone called relaxin. Relaxin hormone plays a unique role in relaxing your ligaments, muscles and joints to make them more flexible. This is most obvious in the musculoskeletal system, particularly the abdomen, pelvis and lower back. Relaxin hormone also effects other organs and systems of the body, such as the uterus, cervix, cardiovascular, digestive, lymphatic and circulatory system.
Osteopathic philosophy states that structure and function are closely interrelated. This distinctive approach towards treating the body can be applied to almost any change in state of health, pregnancy included. Osteopaths can assess and effectively treat many complaints that are experienced during pregnancy.
Common complaints during pregnancy include:
Lower back pain
Sciatica (leg pain)
Neck, shoulder and upper back pain
Pelvic instability
Headaches
Pelvic girdle pain
Heart burn and Indigestion
Carpal tunnel syndrome
Upper back pain
Pelvic floor issues
Swelling of the feet and hands
Shortness of breath
Incontinence
Osteopathic treatment aims to assist the natural process of pregnancy by maximising your body’s ability to adjust and compensate as effectively as possible to these changes. Osteopathy is a very safe and gentle form of therapy and is suitable during all stages of your pregnancy. Techniques are carefully selected to the ensure the comfort and safety of both mother and baby. The “hands on” manual therapy approach of Osteopathy helps to minimise your pain and discomfort and create a more optimal state of health for you and your baby both structurally and functionally. Thus, helping you to move better and feel better.

Osteopathy for Babies
Osteopathy For Babies
During the process of labour and birth babies are subjected to intense forces. Their body twists, turns and is squeezed as it navigates through the birth canal. To aid a smooth delivery, their cranial bones and body is also compressed, folded and moulded. Your baby will naturally begin to release these strains post birth by crying, sucking, stretching and yawning. However, for some babies this unwinding and rebalancing process is left incomplete and the unresolved strain patterns can create disturbances in their body. Cranial Osteopathy can help to release these strain patterns and restore balance in their body.
Cranial Osteopathy is a very gentle form of Osteopathy that is particularly suited to babies and children. Despite the name, Cranial Osteopaths do not just treat the head. Cranial Osteopaths treat the whole body by using gentle manual therapy techniques. This is felt as subtle gentle pressure applied to different parts of the body. This approach helps to restore balance and harmony in the body. Cranial Osteopathy is very relaxing.
Some signs that may indicate that your baby is carrying unresolved strain in their body include:
Constant crying
Feeding difficulties
Asymmetry of the spine, head, hips or feet
Preference to rotate head to one side
Constipation
Colic or excessive wind discomfort
Reflux
Difficult to settle and unexplained irritability
